Oprah no longer world's richest black woman - Replaced by Yoruba Nigerian Folorunsho Alakija!
Oprah Winfrey is no longer the world’s richest black woman. That title now belongs to Nigeria’s Folorunsho Alakija. AlthoughForbes lists the 61-year-old oil tycoon’s worth at $600 million dollars, Alakija fortune may eclipse Oprah’s by half a billion dollars or more. In addition, Ventures Africa reports she owns at least $100 million in real estate and a $46 millionprivate jet.
Alakija is the founder and owner of Famfa Oil, which owns a 60% interest in OML 127, an offshore oil field that produces roughly 200,000 barrels of oil per day and is worth an estimated $6.44 billion.
Alakija applied for an Oil Prospecting License (OPL) through her company Famfa Oil in 1993 which allowed her to prospect on a 617,000 acre block of land in the Niger Delta; however, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) seized OML 127 illegally after finding out the land’s full value in 2000.
After many years battling in court, in 2012 she was finally granted control of half of its property from the government, putting Alakija back into the category of the worst’s highest earners.
Alakija is also a fashion designer and philanthropist. The income from her designs allowed her to venture into the oil business.
She is married, has four sons, and one grandchild.
