Going by the above analysis, a Nigeria Senator earns almost ten times the salary of his US counterpart and more than twenty times the salary of a UK parliamentarian. There are 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives.
President Barack Obama, earns $400,000 per annum; 1.3 million US dollars less than the salary of a Nigerian senator. The British Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron earns just $190,000 a year which is more than 1.5 million US dollars less than a Nigerian senator’s salaries. A Nigerian senator earns 3 and a half times what the President of the worlds biggest economy earns and we have 109 of them. We have not even begun to talk about governors, ministers, special advisers and our dear President.
Our Senate President is on a special monthly salary of 88.33 million naira, while his deputy is on 50 million naira; 1.24 billion naira is paid as quarterly allowances to the 10 principal officers of the Senate, while other principal officers earn 78 million naira every three months.
The situation has gone so bad that more than 70 per cent of national income now goes into paying salaries and allowances of political office holders who form less than one per cent of the Nigerian population.
Apart from the outrageous salaries of the Nigerian lawmakers, billions of dollars are disbursed to the lawmakers by the executive to lobby for approval of bills. Some of the lawmakers are appointed to head some committees; this also brings in more money into the vaults of the lawmakers. In fact, to be a member of the Nigerian National Assembly is a money spinning venture. No wonder, most of the legislators commit all kinds of atrocities including rigging, assassination of their counterparts and wasting the lives of the people to cling to the National Assembly tickets.
And things are not working.
