Funny Beggars

Beggars storm LASG secretariat, Assembly

The beggars.
Beggars in Lagos State on Monday temporarily halted activities at the state secretariat, Alausa and the House of Assembly as they protested against alleged harassment by government officials and plan to bar them from operating in the state
They also expressed their displeasure at the poor state of the government’s Rehabilitation Centre at Owutu, Ikorodu.
The beggars, who were mainly of the northern extraction, carried placards and chanted solidarity songs. They blocked the main entrance to the secretariat, causing gridlock.
They later moved to the assembly where they prevented motorists from entering the complex.
Their spokesperson, Hassan Zakariwa, said the protest was to let the public know about their plight and how government officials had been arresting them.
He alleged that at many of their members were being detained at the rehabilitation centre under inhuman condition.
Zakariwa further alleged that some of the beggars, who could not withstand the inhuman treatments meted out to them at the camp, paid N45, 500 each before they were released.
He said, “The money is usually paid into government’s account at Zenith Bank. The place they called a rehabilitation centre was actually a prison yard.
“About 63 to 65 people are put in one room. We are telling the government to treat us as human beings and not animals.”
The beggars in a statement also accused the government of planning to bar them from street begging.
The statement signed by Zakariwa read in part, “First, our movement within Lagos State metropolis has been restricted; such that anyone caught roaming on the road will be taken to a prison in Ikorodu (Rehabilitation Centre). At the prison, belongings of those arrested will be seized and they will be maltreated by the management.
“Above all, it has come to our notice that very soon, anybody found giving alms to us will be apprehended and jailed for two years.
“We are handicapped, even the able bodied men, graduates cannot get jobs to do. We cannot survive without begging for alms. We don’t force people to give us alms but we cannot understand why the government is interested in banning alms begging in the state.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Major Tunde Panox (retd.) later addressed them.
He said their complaints and the allegations would be investigated.
“I assure you, these allegations would be tabled before the governor later today (Monday). Right now, the governor cannot meet you because the State Executive Council meeting is on and it won’t end until evening,” Panox said.

    • soso August 7, 2012 at 7:29 am
I am sick and tired of these northern cancers…must the people of particular tribe and of a partucular religion in the north represent everything that is bad, ugly and evil. It is time to throw them back to their home state. Southern brothers please raise up..it is time to forget our differences and resist these evil plots of these Fulanis..THERE IS A PRESENTLY A BILL BEEN SPONSORED TO FORCEFULLY TAKE LAND FROM COMMUNITIES IN THE SOUTH AND GIVE THEM TO FULANI HERDMEN FOR CATTLE GRAZING….if we allow this to happen in any part of the south what we are withnessing in the Jos, Abeyi in South Sudan will be a chillds play. This is another plan to have a foothold in the south for land aquisition. We cannot afford to sacrifies the future of our children on the alter of cattle meat…unfortunately non of our Rep has been vocal on this issue..as usual they will collect their normal egunje and look the other way,

men. these guys have 45k to give as bribe. Executive Beggers
  • Irene Atolo Peter August 7, 2012 at 1:52 am
This is a democratic gesture and I do hope Fasola will listen to their complains.
    • Tolu R August 7, 2012 at 4:58 pm
Yes Irene, good democratic measure. But i do hope u understand that with this number of people loose on the street, no homes, no, jobs, no NOTHING! there is high risk and they do constitute a nuisance in the environment. What they can get is better living conditions in the place they are taken to and better treatment (the Governor should ensure that the places are kept clean and the pple catered for )where their children can at least get sent to school (so they won’t become future menace) and the few who are not totally incapacitated empowered to learn vocations. As much as i am scared of these people, it does not mean all of them support the killings or will attack us in Lagos. Besides, they are Nigerians and also have rights.
On the other hand, the Lagos State Government cannot let them so free. no! no! Boko Haram exists now and we all do not trust them (Northerners) anymore so if they do not behave, then, they should be relocated back to their home States. The Northern leaders can make arrangements for them.
  • ohakpu August 7, 2012 at 3:13 am
@mr,look there exist beggers in USA, all over Europe and even in other parts of the world.I hope they are not also BH, what you just said is inmoral,as no body is above mistake, pls tender appology.Maybe God has cracked ur own palm carnel but learn to be humble, make no insult on the poor.
    • nike August 7, 2012 at 3:12 pm
True, but have they Marched to the White House ?
  • Notable August 7, 2012 at 3:28 am
You should know that there is no country that allows beggars to roam the street unchecked. Even, the former Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), El-Rufai cleansed the streets of Abuja of beggars with many arrested for defying the warning of government against street begging. By the way, the beggars offering or giving 45,500 Naira as bribe to government officials should have diverted the same amount to start a small business of their own rather than resulting begging. Some people started a small business with as little as 40,000 Naira or less in Lagos or other parts of the country. Why begging for a living? Why the rush to Lagos? Is there a syndicate benefiting from street begging in Lagos? Many stories have been told in the past where some physically challenged people had stopped street begging to start a meaning life rather than being pesters to the society. I think the Lagos State government is trying to help these protesting beggars to learn a vocational trade they can do to also contribute to the growth of their host State rather than being a clog in the wheel of progress. People attention should be drawn to the fact these so called beggars particularly their facilitators, are even richer that many hard working Lagosians who toil day and night to feed their famillies. In conclusion, I would like to advise the State government to offer the so-called beggars the options of being prosecuted for street begging or learn some form of vocational trade at the government rehabilitation centres. Whatever option taken, each person should be requested to sign an undertaken with a guarrantor provided before being released to the public.
    • AZIMORA August 7, 2012 at 5:46 pm
I agree with you bro. For those who do not know and are just writing nonsense o this forum, let those of us southerners who live in the north educate you. As you rightly stated, some years ago, these people were a nuisance in abuja until El Rufai came along. Despite being of the same stock with them, the former Minister did not spare them. He cleared them off Abuja streets and sent them all back to their states. today, not one, repeat NOT ONE remains in Abuja. Fashola is best advised to do the same. These people come from states. they are the responsibilities of their state govts. They cannot be allowed to put additional pressure on LASG resources. Besides, their own big men don’t give them money. It is only southerners who are only harrassed for money
  • jman August 7, 2012 at 4:07 am
U people cant just walk around the street and expect the government to keep mute about it but i pray fashola should do something to help them cause our country is not ripe enough to stop beggars cause as we all know there is no other option for them to eat.. Some of dis beggars has made enough money to start s business but they prefer to beg and for the ABOKI they should go back to north
    • Musa August 7, 2012 at 12:09 pm
Which tribe in Nigeria that does not have its own share of disables. In the south here the disables are trying hard even to the extent of rejecting the appellation of disable, that they are not disable but are physically challenged and in all honesty they are learning to overcome their challenges trying to live off people, but those from the north don’t want to, even several of them were in no way disable, to them there is blessing in begging (using religion to justify their laziness)
What happen to their states, if Abuja can deal rudely with them and they cannot resist what are they to Lagos or the south let them go back to their states of origin?
How many states in the north have school for the blind or for the disables? Almost all the states in the south have schools for sufferers’ of different disability but in the north it is school for almajirs (beggars) they want.
  • shade August 7, 2012 at 4:16 am
These are professional beggers and not begging out of necessity. they should be rounded up and returned to their states pronto. Let their governments take care of them.
  • Samuel August 7, 2012 at 4:33 am
Clean them up mr fashola before they turn to boko haram. They should go to their state to beg.

    • fred August 7, 2012 at 9:12 am
Mr Dapo u r should be suffering from a chronic disease that makes you see bad as good and vice versa. Your opinion justifies the reason why Nigerians need to ensure that stupid and gutter-experienced ill-luck individuals are extradited from our country.
If u have pity for them, why not take them in to your shelter….at lease u can be ur brother’s (fellow professional beggar’s) keeper.
    • New Nigeria August 7, 2012 at 9:34 am
I believe from your remarks here that you are one of the beggars. people are discussing serious issues here and you suddenly input your direction-less statement. I can easily presume you support PDP. well it is people like you with poverty mentality that people use poverty sentiments to cajole into making senseless statements against right thinking people that are making the society better. it is people like you that will blame the government if an armed robber was killed. Please desist from your mentality, it cannot make you move forward in life
      • OLUMINOUS August 7, 2012 at 11:11 am
U spoke well. dat dapo guy should take care of his senses.
    • Tmoney August 7, 2012 at 12:23 pm
@Dapo,i understand that u are a disgrace to yoruba race,i wounder why you re politicizing this issue?if not for your insanity,we are discussing the issue of beggers that had constituted a nuissansry to the society and started talking rubbish. How many yorubas are in street Kano,Abuja even,Kaduna begging for arms?i know BH would have killed them, hausas are always find of begging and they make more money from doing this because of their laziness, they should be relocated to their state if not, arrested and prosecuted for begging.
    • jman August 7, 2012 at 4:24 pm
I doubt u are suffering from chronic disease but mentally disorder.. U are disgrace to ur household cause they will be so piss to see dis from u
  • don August 7, 2012 at 5:33 am
beggars protesting , This is beautiul and some senseless people are still commenting in their favour . Please return to your states and go beg . Leave Lagos alone.
  • shade August 7, 2012 at 5:35 am
Dapo, Dapo, Dapooo!!!, you are a moron, middle age and begging have nothing in common. Read the report again, if a begger can pay N45,500 to obtain his freedom, he has no business on the street begging.
Weting ACN do you sef? oh I see, you contested under another party and got thoroughly trashed, sorry o Mr sour loser.
The beggers should go back to their countries and states, whichever the case may be, they are clearly lazy idiots and have no business being on lagos streets. shi ke na!!
  • Opeyemi August 7, 2012 at 5:37 am
My advice to governor Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN…. Before dis pple go turn to boko haram..pls return dem to dere state… Dey should stay dere state are been begging rather dan lagos state….. Fashola is working, lagos is working….. Eko oni baje oooooooo.
  • Davison Adeleke August 7, 2012 at 5:48 am
Dapo u just comment out of ignorance, totally out of point. i just hope people on this page will ignore u cos ur point is not constructive enough
  • olanrewaju August 7, 2012 at 6:24 am
This is a funny protest. A begger can afford 45,500 naira where many graduate able bodied men can’t even afford such amount in a month at times. So begging is now a business in Nigeria……. SMH. Let the government train the beggers in vocational trade and those who refuse to stop street begging should be arrested and deported to their various countries and states since they want to be useful for themselves and the state in General.
  • ifeanyi N. August 7, 2012 at 6:57 am
this is funny everything happens in Laaaagos
  • ifeanyi N. August 7, 2012 at 7:00 am
Nigeria is an interesting place real. beggars protesting interesting in indeed
    • Tuni August 7, 2012 at 10:48 am
Every living souls has rights too. May be books should be thrown at those who gives alms……and rehabilitation center revamped.
      • nike August 7, 2012 at 3:08 pm
Books Thrown ? Nigerians seem to have a violent mentality. If it’s is not that Mr. A ‘dragged’ Mr. B to court, it is books ‘thrown at’. Good Lord, deliver us!
  • WalterTalley August 7, 2012 at 7:06 am
God knows I have no patience nor pity for these people. I appreciate their expressing their rights. but that is where it ends. They are professional beggars. I once gave a begger at Ikeja Post Office 1,500 naira after extracting a promise that it was going to be used for transportation to his State only to find him hiding under the counter (parking lot) following week on seeing me. Some of these robbers hide the guns/weapons for robbers. They also act as look-outs for armed robbers. They should either stay in Ikorodu or go back home. NOBODY INVITED THEM TO LAGOS. THEY ARE NOT LSG’S GUESTS FOR GOD’S SAKE!!!!!
  • ntd August 7, 2012 at 7:23 am
The simplest way to make endless and emergency cash is by doing the jobs that the owners hate doing for the reasons best known to them. It is high time to get in and milk in these opportunities. For more information, type the words inside the bracket one after the other{{{top.secrets.you.must.know}}} into your browser, remove the dots between them, end it with dot com and click go or enter. You will uncover the real things the wise people are doing to rake in abundant cash in spite of this global economic crisis. You will be shocked at your ignorance for what you have been missing in life. They are the only links between you and success now.
  • ARANSE August 7, 2012 at 7:25 am
Though neither giving to nor taking of alms by THE NEEDY is bad, these pple must be checkd & stoppd b4 they embrace boko haram since majority of them are northerners/of d north origin and as such prone 2 d doctrine of religion intolerance & tribal supiriority complex.Moreovr,som1 is financially gaining 4rm dre actions as sponsors & many of dm are plainly lazy & lying illiterates whose racial mentality(not religion) will only embrace conservationism.Even Buhari govt was against their method just like every other Nigerian govts & d dvlpd worlds.Fashola didn’t create or compound their woes, their forefathers in their CHEATING MENTALITY did(afterall,Nigerians are just starting 2 feed 4rm d dumps as dey had always wanted) & as such,dy MUST NOT infect the lives of well meaning southerners & easterners.May God deliver d true beggars amonng dem of their burden.
Even though we hav bad leaders,we are practising (& devlpg in) FEDERALISM & anybody not okay with d laws of a state should change base or go home.Better still, they CAN/MAY/SHOULD instead gather their protesting resources & use it against boko haram & their conservative laeders.
AGAIN,GOD WILL DELIVER D TRUE BEGGARS AMONG THEM OF THEIR BURDEN(AMEN).
  • shade August 7, 2012 at 7:41 am
Most of these so called beggers were actually received vocational trainings but it is more convinient for them to beg and make quick cash. That aside, why should an able bodied man lead another man to go begging when the only thing wrong with the other man is an imbalance gait? the picture that accompanied this report speak volumes. They should be the responsibilities of their govt in their states and countries.
  • egba boy August 7, 2012 at 7:48 am

  • Owolabi O.A August 7, 2012 at 8:27 am
May God help this nation, Nigeria and bless us, Lagosians! Giving alms is good in the sight of God but not all alms receivers are worthy of getting. Lagosians should be wise enough to spend their money wisely. Alms giving is not only on the streets. They are on the streets because they’re getting. Let’s be discretionary in this regards. Fashola, may the Lord guide you in your government and see you through in this administration.
  • Nduka August 7, 2012 at 8:40 am
@shade i quite agree with,a beggar giving 45k plus as bribe to stay on the street thats awesome,I hadly knew is a very lucreative business.
  • Nigerian Citizen August 7, 2012 at 8:41 am
    |Let them go back to north to beg. are they not the cause of their problem, they will not get Polio injection claming Isalm dont wamt it, also they cut people hand, nlind them in the name of sharia, and they will be sent to south west to beg… fashola oooooooo if u hear them na God go polish you, the so called beggers have 45,000 to pay bribe, if they are toated by BH they will actually do what they are asked fpr, dont let us give them chance here because all what they do in Jos they wil like o practice it here.
Send them back to North now, tomorrow may be too late

THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE TRICKS OF THESE HAUSA/FULANIS. THEY ARE BEGGARS IN LAGOS AND THEIR SONS ARE THE BOKO HARAM MEMBERS, THEIR DAUGHTERS ARE MARRIED OFF TO BOKO HARAMS MEMBERS.
WELL, WE ARE YET TO SEE THE EVIL MOTIVES OF THESE NORTHERNERS. HOPELESS AND EVIL MINDED LAZY TRIBE.
THERE WILL BE NO PEACE UNTIL WE GO SEPARATE WAYS. UNITY IS STRENGTH BUT NOT THE CASE OF NIGERIA.
FROM MAURITANIA TO NIGERIA, IT IS FULANI AND WARS. PLEASE WE SHOULD NOT FORGET THAT THIS FULANI PEOPLE MAKE UP SMALL PERCENT IN ABOUT 23 COUNTRIES OF AFRICA APART FROM GUINEA CONAKRY WHERE THEY ARE DOMINANT IN TERMS OF POPULATION. THIS FULANI PEOPLE ARE MERE SIMPLE MINORITY IN NIGERIA TODAY. IF THEY CHOSE HAUSA/FULANI TO COMPOUND THEIR FORCE(S) IS NO LONGER NEWS TO OUR SOCIETY. SO THE PEOPLE WE SEE AS BEGGARS ARE NOT MERE BEGGARS. THEY ARE SWORN ENEMIES. YES, I DO NOT HAVE MERCY FOR THESE PEOPLE AT ALL. ORDINARILY, THEY ARE NOT DIFFERENT FROM THE REST NORTHERNERS. TO EVERYTHING, THERE IS A SEASON. A TIME TO LOVE AND A TIME TO HATE. ECCL; 3
LAGOS GOVT SHOULD NOT BE INTIMIDATED. GOV. FASHOLA SHOULD GO AHEAD AND GET RID OF THEM OFF OUR STREETS. TO BE REALISTIC, IF THE PEOPLE OF JOS COULD GO THROUGH THESE SUFFERINGS, THEN IT IS AN EYE OPENER TO US ALL. A VISITOR TURN MASTER MENTALITY WOULD NEVER CEASE TO OCCUPY THE MINDS OF THESE ”BORN TO RULE” SECT.
  • Bola Tinubu August 7, 2012 at 8:56 am
Why not send them back to the North? I always bemused when IBB, Buhari, Tukur, and other Northern leaders are talking about national issues in Nigeria. They’ve forgotten their own sons and daughters are everywhere in Nigeria causinf problems, killing people, disfigure our streets in the name of begging. North has been in power more any other region in Nigeria and they find it difficult to address the social problems they’re facing. Shame on IBB, Buhari, Emirs, Arewa groups, and other northern elites. Fasola should just back them inside trailer and send them back to where they belong – North. Betterstill government can create a settlement for them in Minna or Kano to mimic FCT but solely for Hausa beggers – stupid parasites.

    Too bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the problems planted by our past and present greedy Northern leaders.
The North ruled Nigeria for decades; they could not eradicate polio, blindness and many other dieses common in the North. Today we are all seeing their inability to develop their region and Nigeria at large. Victims of all these dieses are all over Nothern and other states begging. I am sure Ahamadu Bello will not be happy where he is now.
  • joey luchini August 7, 2012 at 11:39 am
Beggars have an associate? that is really funny. anyway fashola is an elitist and he is systematically eradicating nuisance ie makoko, okada and now beggars. pls as he is doing this, remember that these people are human and not everybody has the opportunity or interlect to be rich. i hope he finds a way to accomodate the less privilaged.
  • maisamari,ACA August 7, 2012 at 11:41 am
Mind ur negative comments about beggars, Non of u is better than them. Every body is a physical challenge. 4 instant, if u fail to see ur brother capability except his disability. Who is blind? u or he?
If u fail to hear him cry 4 justice and fair play. Who is deaf? u or he?
If u fail to stand for his right who is crappie? He or u?
lastly, every evil done by man to man will return to him at god time!
  • PREACHER August 7, 2012 at 11:50 am
Dear Governor, return them to their state before they become a BH. Let their governor arrange marriage for them and give them let them begin a new life. The 45.000 is enough to start petty trading and leave better. I am sorry for this northern folks, these is the outcome of years of neglect by Northern leaders.
  • pierro peter August 7, 2012 at 12:07 pm
BENEATH THE MIND OF SIR AHMADU BELLO, HE HAS DIRTY EVIL MOTIVES. THESE NORTHERN LEADERS DELIBERATELY LEFT THIS BEGGING MENACE AND ENCOURAGED IT. THESE BEGGARS WOULD BRING COMMUNITIES DOWN IN THE SPACE OF FEW MINUTES FOR A MERE BOTTLE COKE AND BISCUIT. WHERE ARE THE BUHARIS, IBBS, ATIKUS. AND THOSE POWERFUL POWER MINDED FULANI GENERALS. TO HELL WITH THEM ALL. BEGGARS.
  • Kk August 7, 2012 at 12:14 pm
They claim to be illitrate beggers yet they are richer than those who give them alms. Who really are these people? Its high time they are send back to their villages. These people are evil. They are lazy, diabolic etc. They pepetrate evil at night and constitute nusiance in d day time. Of what use are they to the society? If they are ilitrate, what of the placards? Who write it for them. Its high time we wake up n face reality. These people are not beggers but Boko haram.
  • magdalene August 7, 2012 at 12:33 pm
LOL. This is really interesting.. more comments please!
  • Cherry Berry August 7, 2012 at 12:58 pm
These people can also form a union & operate from an office! Lol.
seriously, if they are not well taken care of in d rehabilitation centre, d govt. Should look into it while am sure dat d govt give out money 4 this purpose but is it used 4 that purpose? Even d bible acknowledges that there will always b poor among us, we can help them, so these people can go back 2 d rehab & b trained in a vocational skill, d money generated from their hand-work is enough to pay them & maintain d rehab.
Finally, I bought a tissue oneday, amazed @ d quality I decided 2 check 4 d company name, only 2 discover that it was done by d handicaps & @ an affordable rate, so I believed dat if properly looked into these people can b useful 2 themselves & community @ large. Afterall aren’t we our brother’s keeper?

To the one person atop who countered the idea of getting rid of beggars in the name of ACN govt., I’m afraid your thinking is myopic, and you are being politically sentimental. Find another evidence to validate you argument for keeping beggars!!!

Constitutionally you can not deport any proven nigerian citizen, if they go against the law they can even be imprisoned, so let´s look for a resonable solution. Ah! other hausas in lagos can be sent home cos they according to ur criteria, can also be BH.mind u i am not Hausa.
  • Babake, August 7, 2012 at 6:13 pm
The same way these beggars came in the name of begging and alms taking that their fore-fathers have entered every part of the country. Look at what happened in Ibadan sometimes ago. Sarkin Shasha becoming antagonistic to the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Through the evil reigns of Abacha, the Sarkin Shasha was given escort and official paraphenelia of office. Up till today, if you want to buy land around Shasha, you have to pay royalty to Sarkin Shasha. In Imo state, the most busiest street – Doughlas street is all occupied by these people who now claim right over the place than Ibos . Let us remember they are not as generous as this to us in their own place.
If they need more freedom than is currently provided for them in Ikorodu, let them go back to their home states . A word is enough for the wise.
  • Agape (God's Love) August 7, 2012 at 8:28 pm
I totally agree with you my brother. They shld have all been arrested at the scene the so called protest for desicating Lagos charged to court and sent to prison and after serving their term ,they shld from prison sent back to their states in the north. The money meant the welfara of these imbeciles have looted by the respective govs of their state who dont do anything for being govs. Why shld they pests for us in the south and why shld they constitute nuisance to us? Why shld make our streets look dirty with thier rags on. If Fashola can decide to remove Agbero frm the streets of Lagos then beggers shld be zapped from the streets as well. Period!
